You may be familiar with Heli-hiking at the Fox and Franz Joseph Glaciers on the West Coast of the South Island. Well our Heli hike is different; no glaciers here.
But you will enjoy a scenic helicopter ride (10 minutes) into the wild, remote high country surrounding Lake Wanaka followed, by a 2 hour downhill guided hike.
Landing on a ridge below the summit of Mt Alpha, you’ll experience the majesty and solitude of this pristine alpine environment as you start your 2 hour easy, down hill hike through the flowing tussock grasses along paths more frequented by wildlife than humans.
During the hike, your guide will point out key viewpoints as well as provide you with a fascinating insight into local history and the landscape surrounding you. Plenty of opportunities to stop and take photos of the incredible views of Lakes Wanaka and Hawea, the Cardrona Valley and the snow-capped Southern Alps.
The hike finishes with a 4WD journey down through Hill End Station, a working high country sheep farm, and back to your accommodation
